X axis stepper making bad noises

Checked flex harness on RH side of machine, found an open circuit wire:

Fix: used blue butt-splice inline, placing wire back inside the wire loom The butt splice is about 3" from the moving end of the flexible wire loom - if it fails again, this is the first place to look

Note: a soldered connection with heat shrink over might be a better solution, if the butt splice fails early, try that next time.

Also attached the flex wire loom to its anchor on the machine frame.

Prediction realized, butt splice connection failed in ~9 months.

Now repaired (for now) with soldered joint.

Note: this cable looks to have been pulled and is a relatively low count braid, should be replaced with something that will flex better over time.
